Smoking can do more than just wreak havoc on your health; it can also leave your teeth severely discolored. In fact, tobacco use, in general, can have a major impact on your oral health. Chewing tobacco and even electronic cigarettes can also have a detrimental effect on your teeth. If you are tired of your teeth looking dull and discolored from your use of tobacco, there are a few things that you can do. Of course, quitting tobacco can help a lot, but you may require the services of a cosmetic dentist to fix the existing damage. Here are three things to consider.

1. Teeth Whitening

One way to remove tobacco stains is through teeth whitening. Teeth whitening uses a peroxide solution to lift the tobacco stains from your teeth. While there are teeth whitening kits that can be used at home, the deep staining often caused by tobacco use is often best addressed through an office visit. In-office teeth whitening involves using a higher concentration of peroxide in order to lift deep stains. In-office teeth whitening can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 and can help reverse years of discoloration caused by tobacco.

2. Dental Veneers

If your tobacco stains do not budge with teeth whitening treatments, there are other options available to you. Dental veneers are one of the best ways to hide deep staining. Veneers are thin shells made out of porcelain or composite material. Veneers are placed over existing teeth in order to change their shape, size, and color. Dental veneers are a great way to completely change the appearance of your smile. However, they can be pricey. On average, you can expect to pay between $500 and $1,100 per tooth for veneers.

3. Dental Bonding

If you have stubborn stains due to tobacco but don't want dental veneers, dental bonding may be a good alternative. Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin that is applied to the top of the teeth in order to disguise small areas of staining and to repair other issues such as chips and cracks. Dental bonding is a quick procedure and is less expensive than dental veneers. However, dental bonding is not a good option for extensive tobacco stains. On average dental bonding costs between $300 and $600 per tooth.

Tobacco can have a negative impact on your overall health. It can also lead to significant damage to your teeth. Staining and discoloration, in particular, are often the result of using tobacco products. If you are dealing with tobacco stains, there are a few things that you can do. Teeth whitening, dental veneers, and dental bonding can all remove or hide staining and discoloration caused by the use of tobacco.
